Young Adult Partial Hospitalization Program for Mental Health in San Diego

Your journey to mental health starts here

It’s not that you’re not trying. You’re showing up — trying to keep up with work, school, relationships, and expectations about where you should be in life, but it’s getting harder to hold everything together.

A young adult partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides structured, daytime mental health support for individuals who need more than weekly therapy, but don’t require inpatient care.

If you’re unsure what level of support makes sense, you can speak with our admissions team or verify your insurance benefits to explore your options.

When Mental Health Starts Affecting Daily Life

Mental health challenges don’t always show up as a crisis.

For many young adults, it looks like:

  • Feeling constantly overwhelmed, even with simple responsibilities
  • Anxiety that makes it hard to focus, make decisions, or relax
  • Burnout that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Difficulty keeping up with work, school, or relationships
  • Feeling behind compared to others or unsure what direction to take
  • A sense that things aren’t falling apart, but aren’t getting better either

This stage can be confusing. You may still be functioning on the outside, but internally it feels harder to keep up.

When that gap grows, more structured support can help you regain stability, direction, and a sense of control.

What a Young Adult PHP Program Is

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a structured mental health treatment program that provides intensive support during the day without requiring an overnight stay.

At PRI Treatment Center, our young adult PHP includes:

  • Individual and group therapy
  • Evidence-based treatment (CBT, DBT, trauma-informed modalities)
  • Psychiatric and medical support
  • Medication management
  • Family involvement and education
  • Holistic therapies (mindfulness, yoga, art, wellness-based care)

Program Structure

Monday–Friday
11:00 AM – 6:30 PM
Lunch: 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM

This level of care provides 20–30+ hours per week, offering more support than outpatient therapy while allowing you to remain in your living environment.
For young adults, this level of care provides a structured reset during a time when life can feel uncertain, overwhelming, or difficult to manage alone.

How PHP Supports Young Adults Specifically

Young adulthood is often a time of figuring out what comes next, managing expectations, independence, and pressure to keep up.

Mental health challenges during this time can make it difficult to:

  • Stay consistent with work or school
  • Maintain relationships
  • Feel confident in your direction
  • Manage expectations from yourself or others
  • Keep up appearances while struggling internally

A young adult PHP provides:

  • Structure without full restriction
  • Support without removing independence
  • A space to reset while still staying connected to your life

Who This Program May Help

A young adult partial hospitalization program is designed for individuals who are trying to keep up with daily life, but it’s becoming harder to function the way they used to.

You may benefit from this level of support if you’re experiencing:

  • Feeling constantly overwhelmed, even with simple responsibilities
  • Anxiety that makes it difficult to focus, make decisions, or relax
  • Ongoing low mood, lack of motivation, or emotional numbness
  • Burnout that doesn’t improve with rest or time off
  • Difficulty managing emotions, stress, or relationships
  • A sense that things are “not falling apart,” but not getting better either

For many young adults, this stage of life comes with pressure, trying to figure out what comes next, feeling behind compared to others, and managing expectations from family, school, or work.

When mental health challenges begin to interfere with daily functioning, additional structure and support can make a meaningful difference.

In some cases, mental health struggles may also be connected to patterns of substance use – whether as a way to cope, manage stress, or disconnect. When this is part of the picture, care can be adjusted to address both mental health and behavioral patterns together in a supportive, integrated way.

For parents, this may look like noticing your son or daughter struggling to keep up, withdrawing, or feeling stuck, and not knowing what level of support is actually needed.

This program is not about labeling – it’s about understanding where someone is right now, and whether more consistent support could help them move forward.

Our Treatment Approach

Treatment in a young adult partial hospitalization program is structured, but not rigid – designed to provide consistent support while meeting you where you are.

Care is adapted to reflect the challenges young adults face, including life transitions, independence, and developing long-term coping skills.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help identify and shift unhelpful thought patterns
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to strengthen emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Trauma-informed care to address underlying experiences
  • Individual therapy sessions to explore personal goals and progress
  • Group therapy to build connection and shared understanding
  • Psychiatric support, including medication management when appropriate

Rather than focusing only on symptoms, treatment is designed to improve how you function day to day, how you manage stress, respond to challenges, and navigate your environment.

For young adults who may also be navigating substance use alongside mental health challenges, care can be adapted to address both in an integrated and clinically appropriate way.

The goal is not just stabilization, but helping you build the skills, awareness, and support needed to move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

PHP vs Weekly Therapy or IOP

Weekly therapy may not provide enough structure when symptoms begin affecting daily life.

Many young adults reach this point after realizing they’re trying, but not improving.

PHP offers:

  • Daily support
  • Structured progress
  • More clinical guidance

Compared to intensive outpatient mental health treatment, PHP provides a higher level of care with more time and support.
