Recognizing the Signs of Mental Health Disorders
in Adolescents and Young Adults

As a parent, it can be challenging to distinguish between typical teenage behavior and signs of a mental health disorder. As we get older we tend to feel more judgment and pressure from our peers and family. Sometimes, this feeling can lead to malicious behavior or cause a person to distance themselves from everything.

Here are some indicators that your loved one may need professional help:

Persistent sadness or irritability

Frequent mood swings, prolonged periods of sadness, or irritability that affect their daily life.

Changes in eating or sleeping habits

Noticeable shifts in weight, eating patterns, or sleep disturbances.

Withdrawal from friends and activities

Loss of interest in hobbies, sports, or social activities they once enjoyed.

Decline in academic performance

Sudden drop in grades or lack of interest in schoolwork.

Physical complaints

Frequent headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained physical symptoms.

Substance use

Experimenting with drugs or alcohol.

Self-harm or suicidal thoughts

Any talk of self-harm or suicide should be taken seriously and addressed immediately.

About Our IOP Program

At PRI Treatment Center, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for teens integrates individual therapy, group sessions, and family counseling, all conducted by our compassionate clinicians with expertise in adolescent care with a holistic approach. These carefully structured sessions aim to help your teen identify substance use triggers, develop effective coping strategies, and foster positive behavioral changes.

  • Individual Therapy: One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist to address personal challenges and develop tailored coping strategies.
  • Group Therapy: Facilitated group sessions where teens can share their experiences and support each other in a safe, therapeutic environment.
  • Family Therapy: Involving family members in the treatment process to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen family bonds.
  • Educational Support: Coordination with schools to ensure academic progress is maintained and any necessary accommodations are provided.

ADHD in the IOP Program

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental health disorders among teens and adolescents. Our IOP program is particularly effective for teens with ADHD, providing them with the tools and strategies needed to manage their symptoms and thrive.

  • Behavioral Therapy: Helps teens develop organizational skills, improve focus, and manage impulsive behaviors.
  • Social Skills Training: Encourages the development of healthy peer relationships and effective communication skills.
  • Parent Training: Equips parents with strategies to support their child’s progress and manage ADHD-related challenges at home.
  • Medication Management: If necessary, our medical team can provide medication management to help control symptoms and improve overall functioning.
