Supporting Neurodivergence in Recovery

How PRI Helps People With ADHD, Autism, and Other Neurodiverse Conditions

When you or a loved one is neurodivergent, navigating recovery can feel like walking a tightrope. For individuals with ADHD, Autism, and other neurodiverse conditions, traditional treatment programs may not always meet their unique needs. That’s where PRI Treatment Center comes in. At PRI, we believe in the power of personalized, holistic care to support neurodivergent individuals on their recovery journey. Whether it’s ADHD, Autism, or another neurodivergent condition, our treatment programs are designed with the understanding that each person’s path to recovery is distinct—and that’s okay. We’re here to help guide you every step of the way.

Understanding Neurodivergence and Its Impact on Recovery

Neurodivergence refers to the variety of ways brains can function and process information, and it includes conditions like ADHD, Autism, dyslexia, and more. These conditions are not “disorders” but simply different ways of thinking and experiencing the world. However, these differences can present challenges when it comes to recovery, especially when traditional mental health programs don’t account for them.

For individuals with ADHD, impulsivity and difficulty with attention can make it hard to stay focused on recovery plans. For those with Autism, social interactions and communication might create barriers in group settings. At PRI, we understand these challenges and tailor our programs to fit the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals.

PRI’s Approach to Supporting Neurodivergence

At PRI Treatment Center, we’re not just about “treating a condition”—we’re about supporting the whole person. Our approach focuses on integration, meaning we connect all aspects of life and treatment to ensure neurodivergent individuals receive the support they need to thrive.

We offer a variety of evidence-based therapies and services that are customized for each individual. Whether it’s managing emotions, navigating social interactions, or developing coping strategies, our therapists and staff work together to build a plan that supports the individual’s unique neurodivergent needs.

Through empathy, understanding, and a deep commitment to holistic recovery, PRI helps neurodivergent individuals develop the skills they need to live fulfilling, independent lives.

Treatment Programs Tailored to Neurodivergent Individuals

Recovery looks different for everyone, and at PRI, we know that one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why we offer several tailored treatment programs that adapt to your or your loved one’s needs. Let’s dive into how these programs can support neurodivergent individuals on their recovery journey:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

PRI’s PHP is ideal for those who need intensive support but don’t require overnight care. This program combines therapeutic services, social support, and educational resources to help neurodivergent individuals thrive. For those with ADHD or Autism, the structure and support offered in PHP can provide the necessary environment to foster growth and recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For individuals who need more flexibility, our IOP is a step down from PHP but still offers intense, focused care. This program is perfect for those seeking a structured treatment plan but who also want to integrate back into their daily lives. The IOP setting gives neurodivergent individuals the tools to work on personal growth and emotional regulation in a supportive environment.

Outpatient Program (OP)

PRI’s OP is designed for individuals who are ready for less intensive support but still need structure and professional care. It’s perfect for neurodivergent individuals who have made significant progress and need ongoing therapy and support to maintain recovery while reintegrating into society.

Find out more about PRI’s OP program here.

Each program is designed with flexibility in mind, allowing clients to progress through different levels of care as needed, ensuring they receive just the right amount of support at each stage of their recovery.

Key Strategies Used by PRI to Support Neurodivergent Recovery

At PRI, we believe in using the right therapeutic tools to help neurodivergent individuals achieve their goals. Our strategies focus on emotional regulation, communication, and social skills, all while fostering a supportive and nurturing environment. Here are some of the methods we use:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps individuals understand how their thoughts influence their emotions and behaviors, while Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches mindfulness and emotional regulation. These therapies are extremely effective for neurodivergent individuals who might struggle with impulsivity, emotional overwhelm, or social interaction.

Mindfulness techniques teach patients to stay grounded and present, which can be especially helpful for those with ADHD or Autism who may have difficulty staying focused or managing sensory overload.

We understand that building meaningful relationships can be tough for neurodivergent individuals. At PRI, we use targeted exercises to help develop communication skills, empathy, and connection with others, helping clients build a network of support that will continue beyond treatment.

The Importance of Family Involvement in Neurodivergent Recovery

Recovery is not a solitary journey—it involves family, friends, and a network of support. Neurodivergent individuals often thrive when their families are involved in their recovery process. At PRI, we work with families to help them understand their loved one’s unique needs and how they can best support them.

Family therapy is a key part of our treatment model. It provides a space for open communication, healing, and understanding. This helps ensure that the recovery process continues smoothly at home, reinforcing the skills learned during treatment.

How PRI Helps Create a Supportive Environment for Neurodivergent Individuals

Recovery isn’t just about the therapies and programs; it’s about feeling supported, understood, and safe. PRI prides itself on creating an inclusive environment where neurodivergent individuals feel like they truly belong. Every individual at PRI receives a personalized care plan that is designed to foster a sense of belonging and empowerment.

Our staff is trained in understanding neurodivergence, and we continuously adapt our services to ensure everyone is treated with compassion, dignity, and respect. We understand that it takes time to find the right path in recovery, and we are here to support each individual as they discover their unique strengths.

Success Stories and Testimonials

Our family is forever grateful to the entire team at Protected Roots, Integrative Treatment Center. The team created a customized treatment plan tailored to address all of the challenges our teenager and family as a whole were facing. Our child worked closely with Dr. Warter who held one-on-one therapy sessions with our teen. Dr. Warter quickly developed a strong rapport with our child and supported us parents in holding our teen accountable when boundaries were not adhered to. Our teen also participated in a therapeutic group run by Dr. Kuo. We all found Dr. Kuo to be available, supportive, and empathetic at every turn. Dr. Kuo structured each session to our induvial needs and goals. We found the sessions with Dr. Kuo to be so valuable and effective- to hear from other families about their struggles which mirrored our own, helped all of us to feel less different, less isolated, and less alone. We also enjoyed working with the interns in group therapy who connected with the teens in our sessions so powerfully. Each member of Protected Roots played a significant role in supporting our teen’s mental health recovery and improving the lives of each member of our family overall. Again, forever grateful!
